This week, Representative Bruce Cozart visited third grade students at HSSD Park Magnet School. During his visit he relayed to students the day-to-day responsibilities of elected officials, and described in detail how legislators are supposed to serve the communities they represent. He encouraged students to be part of the governmental process by studying the U.S. Constitution, and being familiar with who their elected officials are. He encouraged all of them to run for an elected office one day, and to appreciate their education, their teachers, and their freedom.

“Guest speakers and meaningful learning engagements that relate to our current Unit of Inquiry enrich our students’ connections to the real world,” said third grade Park teacher Mrs. Amy Ratcliff.

The visit coincided on Monday with Constitution Day. During classroom exercises, students participated in discussions regarding the importance of the U.S. Constitution and focused on how and why it was created as a “living document” with laws that may be changed over time.

The visit also coincides with the current Unit of Inquiry for Park third graders, which is exploring why rules and laws are important and the structure of our local, state, and federal government. As a continuation of this unit, students will take a field trip to the State Capitol next week.

Park Magnet is the only International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program School in Arkansas for students K-6th grade. One of the details that sets IB schools apart is curriculum based in units of inquiry, which include a 6-8 week exploration of a concept like government. Units of inquiry prompt educators to include field trips and guest speakers to build the “real world” connections that Mrs. Ratcliff references above.
