The local Panda Express restaurant worked with the HSSD Gifted and Talented (GT) Program to bring the Chinese New Year, an Asian holiday celebrated this year from February 5-19,  to life for 3rd-4th grade GT students. Alissa Mayavski, Manager at Panda Express - Hot Springs, provided a guest presentation. She described traditions commonly enjoyed during festivities, including fireworks, family reunions, lion and dragon dances, special crafts, the giving of red envelopes for good luck and items used for festive decorating.

Alissa worked with students to create  jingle-bell noisemakers typical for a Chinese New Year party and to learn the basics for eating with chopsticks. They were treated to orange chicken and fried rice, a favorite dish among families celebrating the event. Students were presented with red envelopes at the end of the program, which are ornately decorated red pockets of paper, usually the size of an index card. They're commonly decorated with Chinese calligraphy and symbols conveying good luck and prosperity on the recipient for the year ahead. Envelopes included free coupons for a Panda Express drink, egg roll and kid’s meal.
